Assignment #2: Effective Communication Blog

Toward Purposeful Writing
  • Read the readings in your textbook "Writing with a Purpose" pages 19-23.
  • After reading, CHOOSE JUST ONE of the following to respond to.
  • You receive full credit for writing a minimum one paragraph response AND at least a one sentence response to another person's blog paragraph.
  • Your second blog is due by next week Monday at 9 AM (10/8)
1) RESPOND: Respond to Wallace Armstrong's "Brandon's Clown" by trying to remember some words of wisdom that your parents or a trusted friend passed on to you as guidelines for giving your life a sense of purpose.  Then describe an incident in which you tried to follow those guidelines.
                                                             OR
2) EVALUATE: Make a list of the explanations Howard Gardner uses to interpret Mozart's claim that he could hear an entire piece of music in his head at one time.  Then evaluate which of Gardner's explanations make the most sense.  Give your reason's why or why not.
                                                             OR
3) ARGUE: Consider what you have learned in this chapter about the ways in which various professional writers work.  Next consider the differences between the writing they do and the writing you have done as schoolwork (this class and others).  Then develop an argument in which you demonstrate in some detail why their advice helps or hinders the "school writer."

  1. A few words of wisdom that my grandmother has passed onto me as guidelines for giving my life a sense of purpose would of been when she once said "you can do anything, if you're willing to put in the work". So i did that and suddenly thought about college. I now want to either be a medical assistant or go to cosmetology school. I am doing all that i can in high school now to be one of the two, always remembering what my grandmother said. I want to have that life i've always dreamed of, so i am now doing all that i can to get that. Because just as my grandmother always says "you can do anything, if you're willing to put in the work".

    1. My family and friends have also told me similar things to what your grandmother has told you. I definitley see how her words would motivate you to live your life with a purpose by going to college and doing your best throughout highschool.

    2. I also got told, "You can do anything, if you're willing to put in the work." My parents did not get to go to college so they put a lot of pressure on me to make it through. They would tell me, if I set my mind to it, then there's no doubt that I would not be able to do it. A lot of people want to do something great in life, but do not want to work for it. I believe that anyone in the world can achieve any goal they want, if they put in effort. I really like your blog because you got the words of wisdom from your grandmother. Andd grandmothers have a lot of wisdom :)

  2. Throughout my life, my parents and family members have always expected me to excel at anything I’ve worked toward, but at the same time their words of encouragement were what made me put forth my best efforts. My mom has always helped me the most, saying things such as, “There’s nothing you can’t achieve if you give your best.” I’ve kept that in mind with everything I’ve attempted and accomplished ranging from volleyball to academics. To get somewhere in life, you have to push yourself and put forth the effort by challenging yourself. I plan to pursue a career within the medical field, which is going to take a lot of determination but I’m confident that I can reach my goals if I simply try my best, as my mom has always told me.

    1. My mom has also told me something similar, so it's interesting to think some other people think the same thing. Another interesting thing is how her words have stuck with you, same as my mom and I.

  3. Throughout my 16 years of living, I have heard my fair share of words of wisdom. Do your best, you can achieve anything you go for, push yourself, never give up on your goals. I think everyone has heard these common quotes. Growing up, my mom and grandma have both said something very important, that always stuck with me. "Just because something happened yesterday, put your happy face on and don't let it get to you." This has always stuck with me, helped me get through tough parts of my life, and is always something that's in the back of my mind. I will stick by this quote, or shall I say wisdom from my mom and grandma!

    2. I agree with when you said "do your best, you can achieve anything you go for, push yourself, never give up on your goals". I can relate to this because my grandma tells me the same thing and i always go by this, because I know i cab achieve a lot and i will never give up on my long term goal. I know i can do it just because of the past goals that i made and have achieved.

  4. Although I am only 17 years old I feel like I have heard a lot of “words of wisdom.” Anyone from family, to teachers, to neighbors, has always been there to motivate me and stay happy. The biggest words of wisdom I have heard would be, “life’s to short to live with regrets.” I totally agree with that statement and I think about it when I am caught up in something stressful. Is it really worth staying up crying worrying about or is life really too short to live with that regret…

    2. Yea I agree regret only holds you down but once you move on you feel better about yourself and think back on that moment as if you learned something and came back stronger.

  5. Usually people get a lot of wisdom when they become an adult. I'm just a few months short of being 18 but I feel like I've been through so much. With that, comes council and words of wisdom. My mom is a pastors daughter, so she has gotten a lot of words of wisdom that she hands down to me. For example, my mom always told me that 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me'. That is something I carry around with me everywhere I go. Also, my dad used to be a pastor in Rhode Island and is now our churchs minister and he's the churchs teacher. So I get a LOT of words of wisdom from him. He would always tell me, going to church is about being saved, not just to go see people you're friends with. And to me, these are words of wisdom because they keep me in the church. I've been in church my entire life, and my parents keep me grounded by telling me scriptures whenever something is going on in my life. Also, my parents would tell me that no matter who turns their back on me, Jesus will always be here for me. To other people, that's not words of wisdom, but to me it is. My parents had a very rough childhood so they can give me even more words of wisdom then other people because they've gone through tragic situations and can tell me about them.

  6. Through my 16 years of living, I have gotten alot of words of wisdom. "Be a leader not a follower" and "never give up" were my two most heard. My dad always said "if you get a good education, you can do whatever you want". I want to be a sports agent when I grow up, which will take alot of schooling. My family has always been really supportive and good with leading me down the right path. Hopefully they are right about this and I will get to accomplish my dreams.

    1. " words of wisdom " can push you to be or do whatever makes you happy.

  7. My family's friend told me "Do whatever makes you happy, life goes way to fast". These words doesn't seem much but it says it right there. My choices with everything changed after that. The reason why he told me this is because if you don't do what you like, you will never know what you're good at doing before you pass away. It doesn't hurt to try new things.. right?

  8. Words of wisdom that I have reicieved are " in order to get what you want, you have to work for it." My mom always told me this, because she was a single mother and had to work really hard for everything she ever got. I've tried to fulfill these words of wisdom my whole life. I work hard in school, at my job, and in poms. I want to be successful and I plan to continue working for it.

  9. When it comes to having a talent just like Wallace Armstrong had I do not hold any sort of talent like painting, or anything quite creative and physical as such. But I do have the talents to be a social butterfly and have the patience to help others in many ways, or so as many ways as I can do. So growing up I thought I would be nurse just like my grandma. The problem was I had no idea if I really wanted to do that and what I would even being doing. So one day I asked my grandma about her nursing job that i always thought it was something she really and always wanted to do. But when I asked her about it as I grew up she had told me something different. She had told me that she did that to almost fit in. Every woman was working in some kind of job and pervading for their selfs as newly 18 year olds. She went into nursing to make her way threw life the way she thought it needed to be done. She hated seeing the sick and hurt men coming back from war and doing the long hours, without being able to see her own family. When she had gotten pregnant with my dad she quiet her job and never looked back. She found that what truly made her happy was providing for her family and being there for them. So when I told her I wanted to be a nurse just so I could be like her she told me only if I really want it. Then she said, 'the only thing worth getting your self into is something you will always love and never regret. Not something you will later regret and never love.' I loved those words of wisdom from her and never forgot them. That's why I hope to be a nanny or working in a day care center with in a year or two. Seems like the best ways I can use her advice and use all my talents given to me to have a great job and future year.

  10. My mom has always been a positive person and is constantly happy. She always tells me and others "There is no such thing as to much fun". When we are at family gatherings, instead of the class clown she is the family clown. She is always laughing and trying. To make our grumpy family laugh. But usually people tell her she needs to act her age. She doesn't care she would rather have fun. When we were at Christmas my mom and I were being weird and got yelled at. In life you have to have fun otherwise your life will be boring

  11. My mom has always told me I need to prove to the rest of my family that I can make it past high school and be successful. My family as a whole do not have a close bond but my mom, my sisters, and I do. It's as if my family compete to better than each other. Every time I fell like giving up or feeling down my mom always tells me and never seems to fail " make me proud, do and see the things I never got to see. There's more out there for only if you put your heart to it.

    1. I agree on proving people wrong becuase i know how it feels when people close to you come at you and think that your nothing and never going to be nothing. those people that think your not going to succeed are going to be wrong when they see you higher then they are, just look at it like that. Instead of them laugh at you your going to be laughing at them becuase you were right and they werent.

    2. I agree that being skeptical and critical is key, but it must be done in a neutral matter to be helpful. I was taught to be modest and try my best when it comes to my passions. I wouldn't laugh at the people who scoffed me if I rose above them, because it would diminish them instead of inspire them. If you inspire them, they will grow wise in realizing their wrongs and then rise with you, and then everyone will benefit.

  13. Threw my nlife ive gotten a few words of wisdom by a few people and ill never forget. The one that i taken and i wont ever forget becuase i will need it threw life is "NEVER GIVE UP ON WHAT YOU WANT AND BELIEVE IN." Those words keep me going and let me be where i am now. Even though my life might not be the best right now i know that in the future those words are going to be worth everythong. I thank god for also giving me the gift that i have, which is to stay strong even if i feel like i cant and also giving me the gift to pass on the words of wisdom to anyone i knwow.

  15. Mozart claimed to have been able to hear an entire piece of music in his head before composition. He says it was natural, and people who knew him said he wrote music like some people wrote letters. Many people are skeptical on how one may be able to do this, and Gardner tries to explain. He noted how Mozart could write music with ease depending on his mood, and other artists, like Beethoven, could not do well at times. Mozart also revised a lot of his work. This proves that the creative process varies on the person depending on their mood and stress levels, and may take revision.

  16. Words of wisdom, they are words that can be said from a toddler to a person on his death bed. when I think of words of wisdom I think back to when a friend told me his words of wisdom before leaving on his own journey. He said live your life without regrets because everything happens for a reason even through the good and bad,the life you chose for yourself is the life you have don't be something that's not you. If your in a bad situation don't go to the lowest point possible fight through it and when everything gets good again you won't regret it. Even now as young as I am it still is hard not to regret things that happens to you for stupid reasons but once you figure it out you won't regret anything.
